Companies House identity verification – what you need to know (and do)
Published Tuesday, 29th July 2025Big changes are coming to how Companies House works – and they affect every company director and person with significant control (PSC) in the UK.
Identity verification will soon be a legal requirement, and while mandatory enforcement doesn’t begin until autumn 2025, early action is strongly recommended to avoid any disruption to your company filings.
Here’s what you need to know:
Who needs to verify?
Everyone involved in running, owning or controlling a UK company - including:
- Company directors
- People with Significant Control (PSCs)
- Anyone forming or incorporating a new company
Key dates and timeline
- 8 April 2025: Identity verification becomes available (voluntary phase)
- Autumn 2025: Mandatory for all new directors and PSCs at appointment/incorporation
- By Autumn 2026: Mandatory for all existing directors and PSCs (12-month transition window)
Failure to verify on time means you won’t be able to file confirmation statements or other statutory documents - and you may face fines or enforcement action.
How to verify your identity
There are three ways to complete verification:
- Online via GOV.UK One Login – using a biometric passport, UK driving licence or similar
- In person at selected UK Post Offices – for those unable to verify online
- Through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) – e.g. your accountant or solicitor
We can do this for you
As a registered Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), Caldwell Penn can complete the identity verification on your behalf.
We’ll be rolling this out over the next 12–18 months, usually alongside your Confirmation Statement. You won’t need to take any action unless we get in touch requesting updated ID.
If we’ve completed your anti-money laundering (AML) checks recently, we likely already hold the necessary documents. We’ll simply need to:
- Confirm your photo ID is still valid
- Match the ID to you
- Verify proof of address if needed
This means no need to use the government system or visit a Post Office - we’ll take care of the process as part of our ongoing service to you.
What happens after verification?
You’ll receive a personal verification code linked to you, not your company. From autumn 2025, you’ll use this code when filing confirmation statements, registering as a director, or confirming PSC status.
Next steps
No immediate action is required if you're already working with us and your ID is up to date.
We’ll be in touch over the coming months as part of your regular company compliance cycle. If we do need updated documents, we’ll let you know.
If you have any concerns or questions, just get in touch - we’re here to guide you through the changes.
