Position/Job Title – Trainee Accountant
Location – Farnham, Surrey
Start date – Sept/Oct 2019
Starting salary – £15,000-17,000 pa depending on qualifications and experience
We are seeking an ambitious and hard-working trainee to join our growing team. Based in our Farnham office, this role is a fantastic opportunity to train as an accountant whilst gaining valuable work experience.
Our accountancy trainees across the firm are involved in all aspects of bookkeeping, preparation of VAT returns, assisting with the preparation of management accounts and statutory accounts as well as undertaking audit work, gaining experience to complement their studies.
You will start by undertaking bookkeeping before learning how to prepare VAT returns. Once you are able to do these to a high standard, you will be introduced to the preparation of year end accounts and management accounts. There may also be the opportunity to become get some audit experience.
The exact nature of your role and training over the course of the next few years will depend upon where your strengths lie. Initially you will assist more senior team members to complete straightforward assignments, however as your experience and knowledge grows, you will work independently completing work for senior or manager review and over time the assignments that you are involved in will gradually become more complex.
There will be plenty of opportunities for you to have client contact, enabling you to build relationships with the clients that you work for. As you approach the end of your training period, you will also find yourself providing training for junior members of staff, and on occasion undertaking work directly for Client Relationship Managers.
We will provide support for you to study AAT in your own time following successful completion of your probationary period. Your previous qualifications and experience will determine which level you start at, and after completion of level 4, you may have the opportunity to progress on to studying ACA or ACCA via a Trailblazer Apprenticeship.
Although the majority of work will be office based, some work will be undertaken on clients’ premises and you may be required to work or travel outside of normal working hours on occasion.
The firm is a dynamic and progressive firm of Chartered Accountants, Registered Auditors and Chartered Tax Advisers, whose head office is based in Bramley, near Guildford. We have a second office in Farnham, Surrey, and the trainee accountant role will be based out of this office. We also have a satellite office in London.
Our clients are our greatest resource, with around 95% of new business being generated from recommendations. We have grown significantly over the past few years, and we are now a 20+ strong team, with firm commitments to grow in number steadily each year.
We have a relaxed culture and provide an excellent work/life balance. We do not expect staff to work long hours, however when deadlines must be met, the staff involved work extra hours and pull together as a team in order to get the work completed on time.
Although initially supervised closely, it is essential that you are able to work independently and use your own initiative. Full training will be provided however you will need to be someone who learns quickly and retains information given.
You will have a confident manner in order to deal with clients when required and be able to answer questions articulately as your experience grows. However, you should also be able recognise your own limitations to identify when it is necessary to raise queries and pass tasks back to senior staff.
Previous accounting experience is not necessary for this role as on the job training will be provided, however, you will have good IT skills including the ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel proficiently.
As previously mentioned, over 95% of new business is generated from recommendations. As such it is crucial that you have excellent written and spoken English, have good communication skills and will provide a friendly and professional service to clients.
Due to the location of the office you will need to have a car and hold a full driving licence. Free parking is available on site.
This role is full time, working 37.5 hours over 5 days a week.
You will get 20 working days holiday per year increasing by 1 day per year up to 25 days, in addition to the usual public holidays.
Study support will be provided for AAT under a training contract.

- You must have (or be predicted) a good academic background to include:
- 3 A-levels or equivalent at grades A to C
- A minimum of 8 GCSE’s at grades A*-C (5 – 9) including Maths and English at grade B (6) or above
- You must have a driving licence and car
- You must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel
